In this course we will explore a range of (mostly urban) American subcultures and social worlds, including graffiti artists, drag performers, and bodybuilders. The term subculture is typically used to refer to a group of people who are seen, or see themselves, as distinct from mainstream society. Through course readings, films and class discussions we will think about the modes through which subcultural groups resist and/or align themselves with dominant culture. We will observe how members of subcultures build community and maintain connections. We will also pay close attention to how performance and material objects are engaged to further these ends. An important component of this course will be to conduct ethnographic research (observation and interview) on a subculture of interest to you. By examining these “small” social worlds, I hope we will be able to better understand how abstract sociological concepts are embodied and negotiated by everyday social actors.
