Chinese 101 is an introductory language course in standard Chinese designed for students with little or no previous language knowledge.

It aims at developing students’ basic communicative competence in the Chinese language and their understanding of Chinese culture. The course focuses on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn basic vocabulary and sentence structures for use in essential daily situations.

Pinyin (the standard Chinese phonetic system) will be taught as a tool to learn the language. Students will also learn Chinese characters to be able to communicate effectively in real Chinese situations. While linguistic aspects of the Chinese language are the primary focus, an introduction to the social and cultural background of the language will also form an important part of the course.
