This survey course examines the historical development of the United States from the Colonial Era until the end of the Reconstruction period. Specific topics we will follow over the entire course include the colonial origins of the United States; the intellectual and political developments leading to the American Revolution and the nation’s founding; important social, cultural, political and economic developments of the colonial, early republic, and antebellum periods; the role of slavery, immigration, and territorial expansion in U.S. history; and the causes and outcomes of the Civil War; and the successes and failures of Reconstruction.
