Welcome to Health Psychology (PSYC 341)! 

Course Description:

This course, also commonly referred to as Clinical Health Psychology or Behavioral Medicine, offers an interdisciplinary exploration of how psychological processes are related to physical health behaviors and outcomes. This exciting area of psychology seeks to determine and implement ways to improve individuals’ physical, mental, and social world, with the hope of maximizing quality of life in a variety of domains.

In this course, students will:

* Learn about stress, common coping methods, and stress management techniques.

* Gain an understanding of interventions frequently used in health psychology.

* Learn about the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, broadly defined.

* Gain an understanding of how psychological processes impact our health behavior choices and lifestyle factors, relate to stress, impact treatment, and influence health-based knowledge acquisition.

* Discuss the interplay between the biological, psychological, and social factors associated with major medical concerns such as cancer; chronic pain; obesity; cardiovascular disease; alcohol, tobacco, and drug use; eating pathologies, and others.

* Use the writing process to produce well-articulated critical examinations of pertinent health psychology topics.
