This will be more than a world music course. It will instead be a voyage of discovery guided by your own interests and aided by capacities that will serve you throughout your college career and beyond. As explained on the ARCHES LIVING & LEARNING COMMUNITY page, our class will feature stimulating discussions and interesting perspectives on timely topics. Our central topic for discussion will be popular music in a global context. BTS is a great example as we can examine them as a phenomenon born out of imitation of Western boy bands who have inspired both worldwide adoration and the wrath of Kim Jong Un. As we explore this topic, we will work to develop capacities in observing, analyzing, interpreting soundscapes around the world, as well as reading and research skills that will inform our interpretation and effective methods of presenting our educated opinions. We will also have some visitors who will help prepare you for college life at Manhattan College. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the course will be our COMMUNITY-ENGAGED LEARNING with the Universal Hip Hop Museum.
