Professor Chavarry  is an alumnus of Manhattan College  and Assistant Professor at Franklin & Marshall College. He  will examine the facial politics of the documentary Runan Caycu (1973), product of the collaboration between the filmmaker Nora de Izcue and the peasant leader Saturnino Huillca, in the framework of the political and cultural reforms of the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces in Peru (1968- 1980). The documentary, where Huillca narrates his struggle to obtain better living conditions and recover his lands, was censored by the government, despite the fact that the union leader was a staunch supporter of the regime and that the filmmaker Izcue had been sponsored by official cultural entities. 

Sinopsis

“Runan Caycu” no solo muestra el testimonio de la vida de un líder campesino del Cusco de inicios de los 70s, sino posiblemente sea una de los primeros materiales cinematográficos que registra el idioma quechua como un símbolo de identidad, de lucha y de resistencia. “Runan Caycu” recoge el testimonio de Saturnino Huillca, líder campesino que narra los enfrentamientos del movimiento campesino cusqueño con los gamonales y hacendados, antes de la reforma agraria, por lo tanto es un material de enorme importancia histórica para el Perú.
