This course is designed to have non-native learners of English who are of a high-intermediate-to-advanced level of proficiency further hone their skills in the areas of writing, especially the rhetorical modes of writing for academic purposes, reading comprehension of authentic college-level passages, learning new vocabulary and understanding it in contextual settings; discerning patterns of speech and word forms, including the proper usage of prefixes, suffixes, and root words; reviewing or being introduced to advanced structures of grammar and writing mechanics; listening to real-life lectures, speeches, and audio/video clips to establish a superior aural awareness of pronunciation, tone of voice, inferences, and comprehension; oral communication, in the forms of replied-to questions in class, paired or grouped activities and projects, and various-length individual speeches on specific topics.
