Sociology of the Family: Mothers, Fathers, and Families.

Sociology opens our eyes to new ways of seeing the world. Sociology of family examines different family structures and systems. Students learn to recognize how culture, media, religion, as well as race, class, and gender act as influencers. This course serves as an introduction to basic sociological concepts with a special emphasis on the female founders of early social theory. Students are invited to share their personal stories throughout the class. The goal of the course is to practice enhanced self-awareness for the purposes of understanding the many powerful external forces that exercise control on almost every aspect of our lives. We will take a scholarly approach to identifying the ways in which our own experiences with family are interpreted and enacted. In addition to traditional text, we will use film and the Internet to explore core contemporary issues.
