This seminar is an extension of the effort to develop news judgment, news writing and news editing skills begun the previous year in the Quadrangle 1 and 2 courses. Quadrangle scholars play a vital leadership role in the day-to-day operation of news organization, and the Quadrangle 3 seminar is a place where they can communicate with each other in a professional atmosphere and build consensus for leadership within the organization. It is also a place to demonstrate that leadership by mentoring a Quad 1 student.

The course is pass-fail. Attendance is one of the requirements for the Quadrangle scholarship, so it is mandatory for this class. Each week, since this is not a traditional lecture class, I expect to have a discussion on the topics listed below; you may help lead some of these sessions, and you will be co-producing some work with your mentee. Students must come to class ready to participate. A student with more than one absence must arrange to meet with the instructor to discuss his-her standing in the course and his-her Quadrangle scholarship.

Students in the Quadrangle 1 and 3 courses this semester will work together under the direction of the adviser. You will mentor Quad 1 students you in the topics below; I will provide instruction and training during some of our meetings. Largely, though, the semester is dedicated to you working with Quad 1 students to socialized into work on the Quadrangle and what it means to be a student journalist in the Manhattan College community.
