Quadrangle 1 is a one-hour weekly seminar designed to introduce new scholarship students to the professional practice of journalism and to set guidelines for their work on The Quadrangle. The course helps train student reporters in news judgment, news writing and editing, ethics and the development of news reports with journalistic voice.

The course is pass-fail. Attendance is one of the requirements for the Quadrangle scholarship, so it is mandatory for this class. Each week, since this is not a traditional lecture class, I expect to have a discussion on the topics listed below. Students must come to class ready to participate. A student with more than one absence must arrange to meet with the instructor to discuss his-her standing in the course and his-her Quadrangle scholarship.

Students in the Quadrangle 1 and 3 courses this semester will work together under the direction of the adviser. Quad 3 students will mentor you in the topics below; I will provide instruction and training during some of our meetings. Largely, though, the semester is dedicated to getting you socialized into work on the Quadrangle and what it means to be a student journalist in the Manhattan College community.
